OFFICIAL STATEMENT: NETZER SOUTH AFRICA CONDEMNS RECENT ACTION OF SRC OF DUT

Netzer South Africa strongly condemns the statements released and actions taken by the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) initially demanding Jewish students to deregister as well as furthering the situation by adding all Zionists and students who believe that the state of Israel’s existence should too deregister.

These actions are blatant acts of anti-Semitism and discrimination against those who dare to think ‘differently’. This is something that we at Netzer are most appalled by, especially in South Africa where the whole country knows the dangers of thinking this way. These harmful words go against so much that is written within our constitution, a constitution that has received international recognition and a constitution that is supposed to be a model for individuals within our country.
Judaism and Zionism are not necessarily mutually exclusive terms however it is becoming more and more prevalent that they go hand-in-hand. It is times like these that emphasise the importance of our unity as a religion and as a people who believe in our state.
These intolerable actions should never have happened and Netzer will continue to educate all our channichim on topics such as this to ensure we play a part in the protection of our human rights as well as the relevance of the State of Israel in times like these.
Finally we would like to thank the vice chancellor of DUT, Mr Ahmed Bawa, for ensuring the publication of these actions as well the dismissal of these calls.
We wish to extend our support to all the Jewish and Zionist students and lecturers at DUT.
